Our story
In the famous 60s, Positano, in addition to the hippy phenomenon, discovered and experimented with the interesting phenomenon of “Positano Fashion”
When leaving the city for a trip to the seaside, one often felt uncomfortable, given the inappropriate clothing, because as if by magic, the climate in this golden bay is always mild, and so one went in search of sarongs, Bermuda shorts, shorts, bathing suits and everything that could be used on the beach or on the boat.
So the first shops selling ceramics, souvenirs, etc.… were assailed by requests of this kind. Since the inhabitants were originally traders, they invented the famous “Positano Fashion” by improvising as successful tailors, cutting up scarves, linen or cotton towels, and sometimes even ruining the brides’ trousseaus, transforming very fine hand-embroidered sheets and old bobbin lace or crochet table doilies into very elegant evening dresses.
This extravagant fashion was appreciated from the very beginning, because it was different and unthinkable by the city tailors. The “pezzari”, helped by the beauty of the place, having a carnet of extravagant and wealthy guests but with a great desire for “diversity”, went to stock up on supplies at the flea markets because the family trousseaus were finished, having already emptied all the brides’ trousseaus chests.
Ancient Tailoring Positano
It was precisely the improvised tailors-tradesmen who, aided by entrepreneurs such as Benetton and Fiorucci, invented garment-dying to provide a wider choice of colours, importing Indian gauze mixed with old lace stolen from trousseaus, drawing the attention of many stylists to produce garments in white and subsequently providing an infinite choice of colours according to needs, right here in Positano.
Many small workshops sprang up like mushrooms, and in one of these, Giacomo Cinque poured out and expressed all his love for embroidery and art, still creating extravagant and sometimes unique garments today.
Precisely to always create unique garments, going around the various antique markets, she meets Riccardo Ruggiti and together they run the Antica Sartoria present with the sales points both on the beach of Positano, and in the center of the town in the Piazza dei Mulini, where it is ritual to repack your bags for the continuous holidays.
Given the need and lack of seamstresses and trousseaus, and the continuous discovery of new places, where to produce, with our taste and our culture, keeping the prices accessible to a tourist attentive to details, but always with an open suitcase. So we produce all over the world and sell all over the world, but with the heart, the culture and the spirit of Positano.
